Uncle John was my mom, Margaret Smith's, brother. There was never a time in my life when he wasn't present. Some of my earliest memories are of Uncle John leading the whole family in the rosary after family dinners at my Grandfather's house. He was a loving Uncle to me, my husband and my children, always there with us on holidays, special occasions and whenever we needed him . He made time to talk to everyone and his many words of wisdom helped each of us . He always enjoyed the family dinners and never forgot to say, after grace, God bless the cook!

He visited Ireland, his favorite place, many times and our Irish relatives enjoyed his visits so much. Baseball was a favorite sport of his and he always wanted to watch it on TV. My Dad would always take off Uncle John's shoes to shine them while my Mom would mend his clothes and fix him something to eat. He never asked for anything but was appreciative of any kindness shown. He was gentle, kind and had a great sense of humor.

My husband, Jack, and I were fortunate enough to have met many of Uncle John's colleagues throughout the years. Many were students of his from his many years of teaching. His ministry was of great importance to the Catholic church and of consequence his many travels throughout the world. The highlight of his travels was when he met Pope John Paul II.

Father John was greatly loved!!
